Meet Our Founder:
Samiya Bashir
poet. architect of language. builder of what lasts.
I came to this work through language.
Language for me was more than ornament.
It was survival.
Long before I knew where to turn, I found poetry as a public utility.
Poetry was how I could make sense.
Poetry offered a way to build meaning where none had been offered.
What I learned decades ago, and what I now teach, build, and practice today, is this:
Language is not reflection. Language is construction.
Everything I do grows from that understanding.
I am a poet, author, educator, and creative strategist working across literature, performance, and public thought. My work lives at the intersection of art and structure—where imagination meets execution, and where vision becomes something real enough to hold. I am the author of multiple poetry collections, including I Hope This Helps, and the recipient of honors, including the Rome Prize in Literature. I have taught, lectured, and built programs across institutions, including Columbia University, the University of Michigan, and Cave Canem.
But Fieldlight Studio does not come from institutions. It comes from years of working with artists, leaders, and thinkers who were already powerful but needed language and structure that could match that power.
